When does a heap of sand stop being a heap? Take away one grain: still a heap. Take away one more: still a heap. At every step, removing a single grain seems too small a change to matter — and yet one grain is not a heap. The puzzle isn't a trick of language. You feel the actual friction: the more carefully you try to locate the boundary, the more boundary you find. There is no point where being precise makes the question easier.
